Things to do and see in Ardnamurchan Peninsula

Shops in the Area

The Ferry Stores in Kilchoan, is the only shop in Western Ardnamurchan. It is very well stocked and is open daily between 9.00am and 5.30pm, but closes for lunch everyday between 1.00pm and 2.00pm. There is a post office in the shop and it’s also where you can buy fuel. Please note that the Ferry Stores and fuel pumps are closed on a Sunday from the end of October through to April.

The West Ardnamurchan Community Garden opened this year on land opposite the Sonachan Hotel. Its aim is to encourage residents to buy locally and provide good quality seasonal fruit and vegetables. There are open days and events throughout the year.

The Mull Cal Mac ferry runs all year round between Kilchoan and Tobermory and takes around 35 minutes per crossing. Tobermory has a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants worth visiting and provides a great day out.
The Kilchoan Community Centre contains the local Tourist Information office and a charming tearoom with home baked goods and sandwiches. You can also hire the table football, pool table and games room.

Places to visit

  • The Ardnamurchan Lighthouse has an interesting exhibition and lovely tearoom open from April to October. You can also climb to the top of the lighthouse. It’s a great place to spot whales and dolphins.
  • The Nadurra is open from April through to October and provides an introduction to the natural environment of Ardnamurchan through an exhibition and displays. There is also a tearoom and shop.
  • There are stunning beach and hill walks all over the peninsula. Buy a guide to local walks and cycle routes from the Community Centre or Ferry Stores.
  • The Ardnamurchan Estate is introducing Land Rover Wildlife Tours.
  • The Ardnamurchan Study centre runs family walks and talks throughout the summer months.

Eating Out

The Kilchoan House Hotel is situated on the left as you come into the village and has a cosy traditional bar and sunny beer garden to the rear. It does evening meals throughout the summer season and fish and chips for eating in and take away on a Friday night all year round.

The beautifully positioned Sonachan Hotel on the road towards the Lighthouse, is the most westerly hotel on the British mainland. It has a recently refurbished café bar and can provide tasty lunches and dinners everyday.

The Salen Hotel is around 18 miles from Kilchoan and prides itself on tasty home-cooked cuisine.

For a more luxurious dining experience showcasing beautifully cooked local produce, visit Meall mo Chridhe. This small hotel and restaurant in the centre of Kilchoan prides itself on its homely, informal but lavish atmosphere.

The Kilchoan Blog is a wonderful resource, keeping us all up-to-date with goings on in the area. www.kilchoanblogspot.com

An ideal family retreat that is peaceful, unhurried and friendly. Miles of clean sandy beaches and coves offer spectacular sea views to the Western Isles.

Mainland Britain’s most westerly point, Ardnamurchan is reached by a slow and incredibly beautiful wooded road, running with every changing views along Loch Sunart to the lighthouse. Protected by its remoteness, this unique ecology hosts many rare plants, birds and animals, including otters, eagles, pine martens, wildcats, whales and sea-eagles.

The area offers opportunities for the fisherman, angler, birdwatcher, diver, yachtsman, photographer and hill walker, and a true haven for those that just want to relax and enjoy the “peace and tranquillity”.

Meandering around the Ardnamurchan Peninsula it seemed an absurd cliché, yet the wild loneliness and loveliness of the area had a haunting appeal. Ardnamurchan has an untamed, magical quality.
