Keeper's Cottage, Ardnamurchan
Description
Keeper's Cottage is snugly nestled beneath the magnificent Ardnaumrchan Lighthouse, proudly stood at the very end of the Peninsula as the most westerly point on the British mainland. Built in 1849 from granite sailed in from the Isle of Mull, the lighthouse was designed by Alan Stevenson, uncle of author Robert Louis Stevenson, and towers majestically fifty five metres above the sea. With the opportunity to spot minke whales, dolphins and basking sharks in the seas below and a variety of bird life, including golden and sea eagles in the skies overhead, Keeper's Cottage provides a spectacular and unique experience for those who like to stay somewhere a little bit out of the ordinary! On clear days be awed by breathtaking, panoramic views extending far out in every direction and on wild, stormy nights be exhilarated by the crashing waves and cosy up inside the safety of the thick granite walls. There is a lovely cafe and gift shop on site, with daily tours up the tower during the season. Tickets can be purchased from the cafe.

"The keepers cottage is a very nice cottage in an amazing venue. We spent much of our stay standing by the foghorn with binoculars in hand watching nature do it's stuff.....wonderful sunsets, sea and skies ever changing and wildlife galore. We saw dolphins, seals, and just missed seeing minke whales (telescope man told us later) Lots of lovely walks and glorious beaches with all sorts of birds and inquisitive deer en route. Was sorry the cottage didn't have a visitor book so people can share hints and tips of the locale but otherwise a great three day break.

"We wanted some time away 'off the grid' and Keeper's Cottage West was the perfect choice. My declaration that our mobiles would be turned off was irrelevant as we couldn't have had mobile reception if we wanted. The peace and solitude first thing in the morning and last thing at night were exactly what we had hoped for. We will definitely be back.
